SSgt Derick Polk Inducted to Sgt Audie Murphy Club - Life Dedicated To Helping Others
By unitedweroll on Oct 26, 2010 | In Military News and Support
Anyone who listens to our United We Roll World Tour Show on Stardust Radio has heard it said time and again that the men and women who serve are givers. These very special people have a true desire to help others, they do not stop when the duty clock stops, they reach out to those around them both on deployment and in their communities at home.
SSgt Derick Polk is a shining example of such a member with a giving heart. While we have talked about many different ways that military members offer their help, and have heard it straight from most every one of the hundreds of guests on United We Roll, SSgt Polk spells out why he helps in this article. You will know it when you read his words.
Congratulations to SSgt Polk on his induction to the Sgt Audie Murphy Club, named after a great American hero who also thought of others first!
We will be honored to share a visit with SSgt Polk on United We Roll Tuesday, November 2nd.

Sgt. Audie Murphy Club inductee finds purpose in helping others
By Pfc. Emily Knitter

BAGHDAD- Staff Sgt. Derick Polk was like any normal high school student, excited about graduating and heading to college. He didn’t know what he wanted to study, but higher education had always been important to him. He filled out college applications, applied for scholarships, and waited.
Then life threw him a curve ball. “I found out I was having a daughter, and my priorities had to change,” he said.
Forced instantly to grow up, suddenly life was no longer about himself.
“What I personally wanted didn’t matter anymore,” said Polk, Headquarters Platoon sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Advise and Assist Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. “I went to day and night school in order to join the Army. I wasn’t supposed to graduate till June, but I took extra classes so I could graduate in March.”
Only planning on serving one term, Polk saw the Army as a way to get on his feet and get his daughter and himself out of the projects in Camden, N.J. “[I joined] to take care of my daughter, hands down,” he said. “I wanted to provide a better life for her. I was not planning on staying in.” But the Army turned out to be exactly what Polk needed. “Once I got in and became a noncommissioned officer, it was clear that this is what I was meant to do,” he said. He has never looked back.
Making the decision originally to do whatever was necessary to support his daughter, he now finds purpose in life doing almost the exact same thing; helping support and mentor Soldiers. “I feel like developing Soldiers is what I am here to do,” Polk said. “Whatever is going on in my life does not supersede what is going on in a Soldier’s life. My main concern is taking care of my Soldiers all the time. Taking care of my family got me where I am today, and I will continue by helping to develop leaders and Soldiers.”
Polk still remembers the first time he saw a Sgt. Audie Murphy club plaque. Mounted on a wall inside a building when he was a private first class stationed in Alaska, Polk was intrigued. “I asked my leaders what it was, and they said it was for all the lead NCO’s who strive to do the best, take care of their soldiers and contribute like Sgt. Audie Murphy did,” he said. At 18 years old, he decided right then that he wanted to be a member of the club one day. “Even though I didn’t fully understand what it was at the time, just based on what they told me, I knew I wanted to be that NCO one day,” he said.
Now, at 26, his goal has finally come true. On Sept. 27, Polk was inducted into the Sgt. Audie Murphy club by Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth Preston during a ceremony on Camp Liberty.
Long before the ceremony was even an idea in Polk’s mind, he had to spend countless hours studying for the board. But Polk claims he has been preparing for the opportunity his entire career. “As a private, I knew nothing about [the club],” he said. “I didn’t know what it took to be a member. But somewhere down the line, I grasped it. I didn’t see this, realize what it took to be in the club, and then start doing it. I just did what I knew as an NCO, what I believed was correct, and through my initial thought process [what I did] was what I needed to be in the club.”
Polk believes that is the reason he was chosen for the club. “I believe I presented myself to the board as an NCO who truly cares about what he does, besides just answering questions correctly,” he said. “I feel like I answered the questions, ‘This is what I do.’ Yes, I learned some more material and programs, but my approach to this has always been the same.”
Being told he had been selected for the club was one of the happiest moments in his life, Polk said. “After all that studying and all the work, it paid off,” he said. “It was one of my goals that I had set years ago, and to finally achieve this goal, there was nothing that could beat that.”
But becoming a Sgt. Audie Murphy Club member is not the final step.
“The Sgt. Audie Murphy club is an individual achievement you work for, but once it is attained it becomes an additional duty to help others,” he said. “You learn so much getting to this level to prove that you can help others. Once you get to this level, if you don’t help others there is no point.”
As a high school senior, Polk never imagined his life would lead him to where he is now. But because of his daughter, he found his purpose in life, and an organization that even has a club to honor everything he believes.
Although his sights are now set on becoming a drill sergeant after this deployment is complete, Polk says he is very content with his life.
“I have everything I want, not because I achieved and worked for myself, but because I spent more time taking care of others than taking care of myself,” he said. “I put my wife, my daughter, my Soldiers, and my peers first, and by putting them first I have always gotten what I wanted and needed.”

Official Transfer of COS Falcon to Iraqi Government - You Can Acknowledge the 1AAB, 3ID
By unitedweroll on Oct 25, 2010 | In Military News and Support
Wow - FOB Falcon! That is a name that has been all too familiar as letters and packages have made their way to that location and many others throughout Iraq where our loved ones and adopted troops have been stationed over these past years. How many envelopes came back from some dusty camp containing a photo with a note saying something like "Having fun at Camp Taji - Wish you were here"? I am sure several of our blog and Facebook readers here at home will have that same thought. I believe that, like myself, many have wondered what has been happening during the draw down to these locations that we understood would be turned over during the drawdown process.
Well, Folks, here is the story on FOB - or now COS - Falcon and the ceremony that took place on October 19th as " Contingency Operating Site Falcon, in southern Baghdad, was transferred from U.S. control to the Government of Iraq Oct. 10 during a formal transfer ceremony." Though the land has been handed over, I have a hunch that the spirit of FOB Falcon will live on in the hearts and the stories from those who fought and taught while there. In the article it states " COS Falcon is scheduled to be the last of nine bases for which 1st AAB, 3rd Inf. Div. has given full responsibility to the GoI."

USD-C transfers COS Falcon to Iraqi government
By Pfc. Emily Knitter, 1st AAB, 3rd Inf. Div., USD-C
BAGHDAD—Contingency Operating Site Falcon, in southern Baghdad, was transferred from U.S. control to the Government of Iraq Oct. 10 during a formal transfer ceremony.
The handover of COS Falcon, the last scheduled base transfer for 1st Advise and Assist Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, United States Division – Center, marked another milestone in the increasing sovereignty of Iraq and the daily growing capabilities of the Iraqi Security Forces.
“Over the past 10 months, we have worked hand-in-hand with our Iraqi brothers for the citizens of the Rasheed district,” said Lt. Col. Kirk Dorr, commander of 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st AAB, 3rd Inf. Div. “It has not been an easy journey to this point and undoubtedly we will see more challenges ahead, but together there is nothing we cannot accomplish.”
During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Richard Hansen, commander of Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st AAB, 3rd Inf. Div., and Sameer Al Haddad, the secretary of receivership for the GoI, signed the final documents which gave control of the base to the GoI. In addition to Dorr, staff Maj. Gen. Ameed Rukn Shakir Laftah Abdalretha Al-Assadi Akeed, commander of 2nd Iraqi National Police Division, and Col. Kareen Auda Kadham Ashoor Almehna, commander of 5th Brigade, 2nd Iraqi NP Div., were present for the signing.
COS Falcon is scheduled to be the last of nine bases for which 1st AAB, 3rd Inf. Div., has given full responsibility to the GoI. It is also the largest base transfer on record for USD-C—as most bases are under official control by a company- or battalion-sized element, COS Falcon was under the control of an entire brigade.
This transfer is the result of an almost yearlong partnership between 5th Sqdn., 7th Cav. Regt., and the 2nd Iraqi NP Div. A contingent of American forces will remain on the base in a smaller compound in order to continue their partnership, and their role of advising training and assisting the ISF, for the duration of 1st AAB’s deployment.
“It was the joint work that has had a significant positive impact on the capabilities of our unit’s training, logistics and intelligence,” said Shakir.

United We Roll World Tour Show
Stardust Radio www.stardustradio.com
Tuesday 10/19/10 2:00pm – 4:00pm Central (Live)
Wednesday 10/20/10 6:30pm – 8:30pm Central (Repeat)
Welcome Stardust Listeners and thank you for joining us on United We Roll this Tuesday, the 19thth day of October, 2010 as we once again take time to honor those who serve our country and who protect our freedom!
We continue to see some articles pointing to possible problems with absentee voting for our deployed troops. As a reminder, we have posted the information for the FVAP (Federal Voting Assistance Program) and the Overseas Vote Foundation in our United We Roll Blog. You can reach our blog on the United We Roll page at www.stardustradio.com.
Now on to our show ....
We have three great visits with deployed members who are serving thousands of miles away from home and families The show will end at our usual time of 4:00pm Central. Remember, if you are not able to stay with us through the show this afternoon, it will repeat again tomorrow evening, Wednesday, Oct 20th at 6:30pm Central. In addition, an MP3 copy will be placed on our show archive site for listening and downloading after the shows have been broadcast. You can reach our archive site at www.stardustradio.info or on the United We Roll page at www.stardustradio.com.
(2:09pm) Our first visit for this show is with Army Maj John J Neal who is currently in the 13th month of his 15 month deployment and is the Brigade Fire Support Officer for the 1st AAB, 3rd ID. In 2004-5, Maj Neal was deployed for 13 months in Iraq, but this tour has been quite a bit different as he started out in northern Iraq as a Peacekeeper, then moved to the Baghdad area in a mentor position as the Draw Down progressed.
(2:44pm) Coming up next is an enjoyable and informative visit with two airmen who are on deployment with the 332nd ELRS (Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron) where they are assigned to the Vehicle Maintenance unit. MSgt Christopher Irving and SrA Daniel Miranda are both in the 4th month of their 6 month deployments where they are pulling shifts of 10-12 hours or more with one day off per week. This fine tuned team has quite a record for getting the vehicles back on the road as you will hear.
(3:16pm) Our third and final visit for this show is with a long time friend of Stardust Radio, who has recently returned to Iraq on a 12 month deployment even though he is in his 40th year of military service. CW5 Paul Holton, who some of you may recognize by his nickname of Chief Wiggles, has not only given so much to our country, he has also given a great deal to individuals through Operation Give, which is an organization he started during an earlier deployment to help the children of Iraq. He also authored a book called "Saving Babylon".
We would like to thank some folks without whom these visits would not be possible. Our deepest appreciation goes to MSgt Mike Hamill and Maj Vinston Porter.

Support Our Troops and Their Votes
By unitedweroll on Oct 17, 2010 | In Military News and Support
10/17/10 - It was an article written in a blog by an American Marine who is serving in harm's way in Afghanistan. Why? Because his orders sent him there. Orders that came from the same government that is about to undergo a series of very important elections in just 15 days. But this Marine has not been able to receive his ballot, nor register his vote, despite jumping through all kinds of long-distance hoops.
When I read the article, it was not printed words on paper. It was the voice of an American who cares enough to put on the Marine uniform and do what is needed to protect our country and the gift of freedom that has been passed on to us by the sacrifices of all who have served in the past and the present. It was a voice filled with frustration and concern that we were looking at a repeat of the election in 2008 when thousands of our deployed members' absentee ballots were not counted.
According to the 2009 MOVE ACT, absentee ballots were supposed to be mailed overseas BY September 18th (45 days before election date). Many did not get mailed by that date and others have not been mailed until more recent dates. Some states received waivers because their Primary elections were later than September 18th. Others received waivers because ....???
How can our country ask men and women to serve far from home, away from families and in harm's way and then throw obstacles in their way to place their votes. As I said in an earlier post, if anyone deserves to vote, it is these Americans who give so much of themselves and their families for our country and for the rest of us. They see and live the direct results of a lot of legislation that is passed by our elected officials. And they shed blood for the rest of us to continue to have the right to vote.
As did others, (see the article and comments on http://www.onemarinesview.com/one_marines_view/2010/10/nc-isnt-the-only-state-jacking-with-servicemembers-voting-rights.html#more ), I immediately wrote to my Congressman (Jeff Miller - (R) Florida). It did not take long to receive the following newsletter from Rep. Miller's office, which is also available on his website.
Miller Newsletter October 15, 2010
ALL MILITARY VOTES MUST BE COUNTED
On October 28, 2009, President Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2010. The NDAA enacted a major overhaul of the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) in the form of the Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act (MOVE Act). This was the fourth time since I have represented you in Congress that we on the House Armed Services Committee have sought, through targeted legislation, to ensure that our men and women in uniform have their votes counted. Although this legislation was passed more than one year prior to the upcoming midterm elections, many states and territories to this day have refused to fully abide by the law.
The MOVE Act requires that all states submit validly requested absentee ballots to all absent uniformed services voters or overseas voters no later than 45 days prior to an election. In response to this law, at least 20 states, including Florida, have enacted legislation to comply with the MOVE Act and many others have established detailed plans to get absentee ballots to military members overseas with enough time for them to be returned and counted in the upcoming election. However, there have been many states who have not acted in a sufficient amount of time. It is now 17 days before the election, and we are facing the real possibility that many service members will be disenfranchised.
Over the past three months, three times I repeatedly urged the Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Department of Defense (DoD) to monitor and to ensure states’ compliance with the law. In my correspondence with Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary Robert Gates, I identified the significance of the MOVE Act and stated that the law specifically requires that all states comply and, furthermore, requires them to enforce compliance. My letter to Secretary Gates came immediately after DoD announced on August 27, 2010 that four states and the District of Columbia were denied waivers, while five other states were granted waivers from complying with the law’s 45 day requirement. I was certainly disappointed that numerous states were granted waivers, but I was most concerned that those states that were not granted waivers would be unable to provide ballots to our men and women warriors in time for their votes to be counted. Moreover, I trusted that DoD and DoJ had identified all non-compliant states and that these two agencies were combining efforts to assist these states.
Unfortunately, it appears that I placed too much trust in the DoD and DoJ leadership. Through recent media reports, and thanks to the efforts of the non-profit Military Voter Protection Project, it appears that numerous counties in multiple states have been found in violation of the law. We have learned that in New York, New Mexico, and Nevada, the DoJ has recently filed suit or reached agreement to extend the time period for receipt of completed ballots. While this action by DoJ is positive, it concerns me greatly that of these three states only New York was identified by DoD in that August 27 press release concerning granted waivers of the 45 day requirement. Additionally, it has been reported just this week that some counties in Alabama, Arkansas, and Illinois have failed to comply with the MOVE Act.
How many other states are non-compliant? How many thousands of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are going to be disenfranchised? Why have the DoJ and DoD shirked their responsibilities under the law?
DoD knows the names and locations of each and every service member deployed to a foreign land. DoD also operates the Federal Voting Assistance Program – a great resource for our military personnel and their families, as well as other citizens living overseas. In addition, DoJ is required to enforce federal voting laws and to do so without prejudice. These two agencies are tasked with these responsibilities, and they must not neglect them. If they cannot adequately ensure that our fighting men and women are not disenfranchised, then they must act swiftly and immediately to fix the problem. If that means extending the date on which ballots must be received, then they must do it. If that means suing every state that violates this law, then it should be done.
Every American understands the importance of the right to vote. Blood and tears have been shed to ensure this sacred and supreme Constitutional right. More importantly, the American people know that without the Soldier, Sailor, Airman, and Marine, this right would be without its most able defender. With only days remaining before the midterm elections on November 2, I assure you and all of Northwest Florida that I will do everything in my power to guarantee that our warriors’ votes are counted.
-----------------------------------------------------
I would like to thank Rep Miller for his quick & very precise response
and for his non-ending efforts on behalf of our military members.
In his newsletter Rep Miller states, "If that means extending the date on which ballots must be received, then they must do it." I would certainly support this and any delay necessary in order to see that every one of our troops stationed overseas - and their family members - are able to register their votes.
He also states, "If that means suing every state that violates this law, then it should be done." Well, check this out! In today's online Washington post, one of the headlines reads "Justice Dept. sues New York for military absentee ballot delay". See this article at http://voices.washingtonpost.com/federal-eye/2010/10/justice_dept_sues_for_military.html
By looking at a number of sites, it appears fair to say that we have somewhere over 200,000 troops stationed in 144 countries and territories, with another 20,000 or so sailors and Marines deployed on board Navy ships. These numbers are certainly not anything to stand on, but are gathered by a quick glance at some sources. If you go to the website listed above, "Maj Pain", the writer of the blog "One Marine's View" has hammered out some pretty respectable numbers.
Is our government - our elected officials - ready to just ignore these thousands of dedicated Americans and their votes? I would certainly hope not! I can't imagine any election supervisor being able to sleep at night until the absentee ballots are in the mail and all other deadlines are met.
Voting is a privilege that was won for us by the blood of our forefathers. Our deployed troops have seen how the Iraqi people have braved violence and fear so they could finally vote. Have we Americans become so complacent and reliant on others that we have forgotten the value and the pride that goes into casting one's vote? Our troops have not forgotten and they righteously ask that their votes be counted.

Welcome Stardust Listeners and thank you for joining us on United We Roll this Tuesday, the 12thth day of October, 2010 as we once again take time to honor those who serve our country and who protect our freedom!
We have four wonderful visits with deployed members who are serving overseas. All of our guests have something in common - they are protecting the gift of freedom that has been given to us by all who have served through the years and today to protect both our freedom and our country. The show will end at our usual time of 4:00pm Central. Remember, if you are not able to stay with us through the show this afternoon, it will repeat again tomorrow evening, Wednesday, Oct 13th at 6:30pm Central. In addition, an MP3 copy will be placed on our show archive site for listening and downloading after the shows have been broadcast. You can reach our archive site at www.stardustradio.info or on the United We Roll page at www.stardustradio.com.
(2:09pm) Our first visit for this show is with Army SSG Jen Menger of the 1st Advise and Assist Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division where she is serving as a Public Affairs member for the 1st Brigade. Coming from a family with 13 military members, including both parents and an older brother, SSG Menger certainly understands what it means to be a soldier and to serve.
(2:31pm) Coming up next is our visit with Mr Carl Vogelweze (or "Birdman" as some of his co-workers call him) who is a Wildlife Biologist and a Federal Affiliate assigned for a few months to Joint Base Balad and the 332nd AEW as an Airport Biologist. This is a very interesting visit and one where we will all learn some things.
(3:05pm) Our third visit for this show is with newly promoted Army Private First Class Venessa Harbo who is currently on deployment with the HHC Task Force 2-1, 1-3 AAB, 3ID. Fresh from Basic & Human Resources Training at home and only a couple of months so far with her deployed unit has not kept PFC Harbo from digging in to her job and becoming part of the team.
(3:26pm) Our fourth and final visit is with a First Sergeant who is referred to as PHENOMENAL - caps included - by a member who serves in his unit. SMSgt Henry Hayes has been on deployment with the 376th EMSG (Expeditionary Mission Support Group) where he has worn the many hats typical of a First Sergeant.

We would like to thank some folks without whom these visits would not be possible. Our deepest appreciation goes to MSgt Mike Hamill, Capt Curt Schultheiss, Maj Vinston Porter and TSgt Jennifer Buzanowski.
