Welcome Stardust Listeners! Thank you for joining us on United We Roll
Tuesday, the 29th day of November, 2011.
For those of us at home, the typical holiday hustle and bustle has begun as lights are going up on homes and shoppers are busy collecting the treasures to be wrapped and shared with loved ones and friends. Hmmmm, wouldn’t a friend be considered a loved one, too?
For many of our friends, neighbors and family members, the holidays will be bittersweet at best, as one who is very close to them is standing guard over freedom thousands of miles from home. If you have a neighbor who has a missing member due to deployment, please take time to stop by and let them know they have your support and friendship. Our second guest, CJ Grisham, is going to add to some ideas on how families can be helped – simple in effort, but great on giving and support.
We bring you two outstanding visits today with two deployed members who have some information to share that we found to be new to us and very educational, as well as very
interesting. The more we know about what our troops and families face, the more we know how we can help.
(2:07pm Central) Our first guest is LTC Thomas Hughes, who is the chief of the mental health unit with the 376th Expeditionary Medical Group at Transit Center Manas. LTC Hughes says he performs traditional military psychotherapy, special evaluations, outreach and prevention, assisting medical providers with behavioral counseling. He is primarily in charge of maintaining the psychological health of the force.
(2:56pm Central ) Our next guest for today is CJ Grisham, who is on deployment in Kandahar, Afghanistan and who is the author of the award-winning blog called A Soldier’s Perspective (www.soldiersperspective.us). CJ brings us a wealth of information today about the country of Afghanistan, the history of agriculture in this area, seasonal weather, traditions, how our troops live and more.
Both of these Heroes of Freedom took plenty of time from their very busy schedules – which probably includes some of the time they have to eat or sleep or talk with family over Internet, and we cannot thank them enough. Our show will end at 4pm Central today. Remember, if you are not able to stay with us through this afternoon, this show will repeat again tomorrow evening, that is Wednesday (Nov 30th) at 6:30pm Central.
MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL & MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA!

RESPONSES FROM TROOPS WHO HAVE RECEIVED
FREE COFFEE AND A NOTE FROM HOME
If you are not familiar with the Green Beans "Cup of Joe" Program, it is a wonderful way to reach out to troops who are serving in deployed areas around the globe with an unexpected free coffee and a note from home. You can purchase one or as many cups of coffee as you like and write a note to be given with the coffee to a member who walks in to a Green Beans shop and is given your gift and note. Most recipients do send you a note back and some will even ask to become email pals. For more information and other items available at Green Beans, go to http://www.greenbeanscoffee.com/coj/index.php. Following are some of our most recent notes from members who received a free Cup of Joe and our note:
Thank you for your kind donation, words and prayers. When I am home at the weekends my family and I go out shopping. My wife and daughter will sit me down at our favourite coffee shop, buy me coffee and a paper and let me be for a few hours as they go off and spend my money. Then they return and join me in coffee and attempt to explain to me how spending money in a sale makes sense and that having more than four pairs of shoes is normal. We do this over a cup of coffee and pastries before setting off to do what ever it is we do. With your donation I shall buy a brew, sit back and think of home and my family. I shall read my paper on the iPad and take a few minutes out to relax. Again thank you for allowing me a little bit of home life here in Kuwait amongst the flies, sand and heat. Martyn
Judi, Thanks very much for your support, kind words and coffee. I work through the night here and it is tough to sleep during the days while everyone else is milling about. The coffee really helps out. Thanks again and God bless.
Ma'am, Thank you very much for your kind message and unmatched support. Its hard to believe that nearly 9 years ago the war in Iraq started and here we are now ending our mission. I have had the opportunity to be a part of this mission from the beginning, middle and end as I am getting ready to finish my third year long deployment and close the mission out. Thanks for all you do for us. MAJ W

Survey Shows Growing Gap Between Civilians, Military
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Nov. 28, 2011 - "A new report confirms a concern defense and military leaders have long recognized: There's a growing disconnect between Americans and their
military. The report, published last week by the Pew Research Center, notes that a smaller share of Americans currently serve in the armed forces than at any time since the
peacetime era between World Wars I and II.
....... The report confirmed perceptions by civilians as well as veterans that the American public doesn't understand the problems faced by those in the military. Seventy-seven
percent of veterans and 71 percent of the general public shared this view."

Sadly, we know that more injured Veterans who are waiting on slow claims will also be needing help for utilities, groceries, and some for help with rent. We are talking about Veterans who served one to four tours in Iraq and/or Afghanistan and came home with serious, life changing injuries, but whose claims still have not cleared the VA.
Until these claims are settled on a timely basis and until our Vets who are trying to recover from amputations and worse are able to focus on healing without worrying about keeping a roof over their heads, we must be ready to help. Veterans For Change is great about locating organizations and churches to help, talking to landlords to work out payments, etc. But each week, there is still help needed to see that injured Vets have shelter, food and power. Please help whenever you can. THANK YOU!
And a reminder to all - Will you please contact your elected officials and ask them to expedite the claims of the wounded from your state so they do not suffer the additional stress of worrying about losing their homes while they also try to heal?
