Let's Stand Guard Over Our Freedom From Political/Special Interest Attack
By unitedweroll on May 21, 2012 | In Military News and Support
While Our Troops Stand Guard Over Our Freedom From Physical Attack,
Let's Stand Guard Over Our Freedom From Political/Special Interest Attack
It does not take a national day of remembrance like Memorial Day, to turn my mind and heart in the direction of giving appreciation to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that you and I can continue to live the America Life. I grew up with giving this thanks every day and still do, but I realize that many Americans do not. In fact, according to a Gallop Poll only 28% of Americans give thanks on these dates.
Only 28% of Americans stop to say thanks for their freedom to the men and women who are dying and being maimed in combat so that their neighbors can remain free. That is shameful!
To be more specific, many of the 99+% of Americans go on living their daily lives without a thought as to how they are able to live without guns and tanks in the streets, without electricity being rationed for only a few hours a day, with running water possibly no longer being available, without being able to make one's own decisions, without transportation other than by foot to get to work, home, and what little shopping mat be available.
This is just a thumbnail of what life could be like if it were not for the men and women in uniform who give us the gift of freedom through their service. This has been recognized for many generations before ours. What the heck has happened in the last 20 or so years that people have become so absorbed in their own lives that they no longer pay attention to what is going on around them?
Have some Americans become so complacent with their lives that they do not feel the importance of being informed about how the world operates and from where the things that really count do come? Thankfully, there are many Americans who stay on top of the news and who reach out every day even if in some small way to make their community or country a bit better through volunteer efforts. It is these Americans who are usually the ones who turn up for Memorial services. It is these Americans who usually pay attention to the legislation that is proposed and contact their D.C. representatives to voice their opinions. It is these Americans who reach out to give thanks and support to our military members, first responders and their families, all of whom also serve.
Please, let us not stop our traditions of remembering, of giving thanks and of honoring those Americans who gave their lives so this country will continue on as it has been - a land of values, a land of fairness, a land of respect & caring for each other, a land that appreciates those who reach out to support and to protect their neighbors, to protect our traditions born from years of blood and sacrifice among our forefathers for such as our Constitution, our Pledge of Allegiance, the Flying of our United States Flag and more.
Let us make sure that our country's great history continues to be told to our children, grandchildren and on and on. And let us raise our children to respect those who serve in the Armed Forces and as First Responders, as they are the ones to put themselves between us and harm on the country and community levels. Let us raise our children to respect our educators and, if they show proper respect for their trusted position and use it to benefit our country, not to seek better health benefits or pay for themselves, then let's also teach respect for the elected officials.
Let us bring back the earned pride that was never before questioned. Let us once again display our country's flag outside every home and business. Let us be proud of Old Glory & The Bald Eagle, Our Pledge of Allegiance, let's play our National Anthem, let's use our right to vote, our right to stand as a majority, our freedom and our liberty. Let's pull our USA flag out of a closet and put it back in the White House. Most of all, let us remember that our government is elected to work for the people, not for the government to rule over the people. That kind of action may fit in another part of this planet - but not here in the USA.
THINK AMERICAN - BE AMERICAN - USA PROUD!!!

‘You are not forgotten’ DOD POW MIA Office Release
By unitedweroll on May 14, 2012 | In Military News and Support
Release No: 122
May 14, 2012
‘You are not forgotten’
by Jon Hanson
Air Force Personnel, Services and Manpower Public Affairs
JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas – Four simple words for years have defined the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action mission. “You are not forgotten” symbolizes the Department of Defense intention to bring home service members who are unaccounted for from past wars and conflicts.
The members of the Air Force Missing Persons Branch at the Air Force Personnel Center serve as the liaison between government agencies and families of Air Force service members who are still unaccounted for from the Korean War to present day.
“One of my goals is to stay involved with our families,” said Sandra Kolb, Air Force Missing Persons Branch chief. “I remind them we are committed to looking for their family member and bringing them home. Every December I send out an annual letter letting them know about the family member updates planned for the calendar year and update them on any new accountability efforts.”
The DOD POW/Missing Personnel Office, or DPMO, annually conducts as many as eight regional family member updates at different locations around the country to reach out to unaccounted-for service members’ families without forcing them to incur travel costs, explained Vincent Fonner, AFPC Casualty Matters Division Chief. During the meetings, the Air Force Missing Persons Branch and DPMO analysts meet one-on-one with Air Force family members to discuss the details of each case.
The update meetings are crucial to helping the service casualty offices establish a strong relationship with the families, Fonner said.
“One of the key components of our mission is to foster trust and transparency so family members know what is being done to bring unaccounted for Airmen home. Open, viable, continuous interaction with the families is how we develop that relationship,” he explained.
Daily contact
The Air Force Missing Persons Branch interacts daily with family members answering case questions. They also frequently gain new information from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, or JPAC, and DPMO and provide the updates and information to the family.
When not interacting with family members, the three person staff continues to work on cases to stay current on requests for data. The branch also coordinates with Air Force Mortuary Affairs on memorial services and burials when remains are identified.
Properly recognizing those service members
“Our office works closely with the AFPC Awards and Decorations office to ensure all earned awards and decorations are presented to the primary next of kin during a ceremony,” said Staff Sgt. Danielle Harris, an AFPC Missing Persons Branch liaison. “Our office also works with the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records and congressional inquiries related to POW/MIA status, and we are the point of contact for requests to add Airmen to the Vietnam Veteran Memorial.”
Recently, during a family member update in Dallas, Harris presented the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and Air Force Longevity Service Award to the daughter and primary next of kin of one missing service member.
“It was very touching and hit the heart hard,” Harris said. “I had been working with her and other offices for several months to obtain these decorations so she could honor her dad. All of us in the Air Force Missing Persons branch were able to put the biggest smile -- and happy tears -- on the family’s faces.”
POW/MIA bracelets
“We also receive requests from private citizens who have POW/MIA bracelets they want to pass on to family members of those still missing, or give them to the returned POW to let them know they have not forgotten,” Harris said. “These letters to the families and former POWs are very touching.”
This mission can be a very humbling experience.
“When you go to these meetings and talk to the families it’s reinvigorating,” Kolb said. “You are reminded that a family at the end of the case file is still waiting, still hoping for resolution for their case. It is a great way to remind us why we are here and why this mission goes on.”
These feelings are shared by other branch members.
“This is the best job I have worked in my 10 years in the Air Force and definitely the most rewarding and heartfelt job,” Harris said. “Every day we touch lives and hearts of our family members and honor the service of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”
