Most of us are familiar with their name - US Army Corps of Engineers. But how much more than the name do we know about this very active, educated and amazing group of men and women? Some might say something like "Oh yeah, they were involved with Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans" and others might say "They were in my area working on a dam and water control system".

But, how many of us know really what the US Army Corps of Engineers is about and the huge amount of tasks they take on both for the DOD/Military and in our civilian communities? This does not even take into account the Research and Development, work in Environmental areas, Sustainability and Emergency Operations.

Hurricane Season began here in the USA on June 1st of 2013. Many of our US neighbors may not even be aware of that fact, but those of us who have dealt with hurricanes and the helpless feeling of "where/how do I start" after a storm has come through, know very well when the season starts and ends.

I guess that is why I was so pleased to see that US army Corps of Engineers has already planned for this season and already held a press conference on this subject. You can see the video at DVIDS. It is called "Army Corps Braces for 2013 Hurricane Season" and the link to the video is located at:

Not only was I curious to see this video, but I also thought back to the interviews we have hosted over the past years with members from this unit while they were on deployment in Iraq, Afghanistan and Djibouti. Whether they were working on medical facilities, schools or systems to provide safe, potable (drinking) water, every member was enthusiastic about the assistance that their presence was providing.

So, I filled up another cup of coffee and headed to the website for the US Army Corps of Engineers. You can find this at http://www.usace.army.mil. I spent about 30 minutes reading through a variety of information and I realized that there was much more that I did not know about this unit of people with great skills and determination to leave things better than they were, wherever they go. Thus, their slogan: Through deeds, not words, we are BUILDING STRONG.

As soon as I get through with some chores, I will go back to the site to make sure I am properly informed and will look forward to my next opportunity to thank a member. Of course, that includes the families of the US Army Corps of Engineers.

I hope you will take some time to do the same. It could be a great family experience.
