‘You are not forgotten’ DOD POW MIA Office Release

‘You are not forgotten’
by Jon Hanson
Air Force Personnel, Services and Manpower Public Affairs
JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas – Four simple words for years have defined the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action mission. “You are not forgotten” symbolizes the Department of Defense intention to bring home service members who are unaccounted for from past wars and conflicts.
The members of the Air Force Missing Persons Branch at the Air Force Personnel Center serve as the liaison between government agencies and families of Air Force service members who are still unaccounted for from the Korean War to present day.
“One of my goals is to stay involved with our families,” said Sandra Kolb, Air Force Missing Persons Branch chief. “I remind them we are committed to looking for their family member and bringing them home. Every December I send out an annual letter letting them know about the family member updates planned for the calendar year and update them on any new accountability efforts.”
The DOD POW/Missing Personnel Office, or DPMO, annually conducts as many as eight regional family member updates at different locations around the country to reach out to unaccounted-for service members’ families without forcing them to incur travel costs, explained Vincent Fonner, AFPC Casualty Matters Division Chief. During the meetings, the Air Force Missing Persons Branch and DPMO analysts meet one-on-one with Air Force family members to discuss the details of each case.
The update meetings are crucial to helping the service casualty offices establish a strong relationship with the families, Fonner said.
“One of the key components of our mission is to foster trust and transparency so family members know what is being done to bring unaccounted for Airmen home. Open, viable, continuous interaction with the families is how we develop that relationship,” he explained.
Daily contact
The Air Force Missing Persons Branch interacts daily with family members answering case questions. They also frequently gain new information from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, or JPAC, and DPMO and provide the updates and information to the family.
When not interacting with family members, the three person staff continues to work on cases to stay current on requests for data. The branch also coordinates with Air Force Mortuary Affairs on memorial services and burials when remains are identified.
Properly recognizing those service members
“Our office works closely with the AFPC Awards and Decorations office to ensure all earned awards and decorations are presented to the primary next of kin during a ceremony,” said Staff Sgt. Danielle Harris, an AFPC Missing Persons Branch liaison. “Our office also works with the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records and congressional inquiries related to POW/MIA status, and we are the point of contact for requests to add Airmen to the Vietnam Veteran Memorial.”
Recently, during a family member update in Dallas, Harris presented the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and Air Force Longevity Service Award to the daughter and primary next of kin of one missing service member.
“It was very touching and hit the heart hard,” Harris said. “I had been working with her and other offices for several months to obtain these decorations so she could honor her dad. All of us in the Air Force Missing Persons branch were able to put the biggest smile -- and happy tears -- on the family’s faces.”
POW/MIA bracelets
“We also receive requests from private citizens who have POW/MIA bracelets they want to pass on to family members of those still missing, or give them to the returned POW to let them know they have not forgotten,” Harris said. “These letters to the families and former POWs are very touching.”
This mission can be a very humbling experience.
“When you go to these meetings and talk to the families it’s reinvigorating,” Kolb said. “You are reminded that a family at the end of the case file is still waiting, still hoping for resolution for their case. It is a great way to remind us why we are here and why this mission goes on.”
These feelings are shared by other branch members.
“This is the best job I have worked in my 10 years in the Air Force and definitely the most rewarding and heartfelt job,” Harris said. “Every day we touch lives and hearts of our family members and honor the service of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”

Air Force intel field squadron command applications due by June 1st

Intel field accepting squadron command applications
by Debbie Gildea
Air Force Personnel, Services and Manpower Public Affairs
JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO - RANDOLPH, Texas – Nomination packages for officers interested in intelligence squadron command opportunities are due to the Air Force Personnel Center by June 1, center officials said.
Candidates selected will fill projected calendar year 2013 vacancies, said Maj. Nicole Francis, intelligence career field assignments officer.
To be considered for command, candidates must be lieutenant colonels with a July 1, 2008 or later date of rank, or lieutenant colonel-selects from the calendar year 2011 promotion board, said Francis.
Core intelligence, space and missile, weather, cyber, scientist, engineer and acquisition officers are eligible, but non-intelligence officers must be released by their assignment team before they apply, she said. In addition, non-intelligence officers must have served in at least one intelligence-related assignment since May 31, 2006.
“Squadron commanders play a significant role in the success of an organization as mission leaders, advisors and mentors, so only those officers who are ready for the scope of responsibility that command entails should be nominated,” said Francis.
Selection for a command opportunity is very competitive, she said.
“The number of candidates typically exceeds projected or known vacancies, but that helps ensure enough candidates are available for unexpected requirements," said Francis. "All officers on the command candidate list are considered volunteers for worldwide command opportunities,” she added.
To be considered, officers must submit their statement of intent online via their Airman Development Plan.
Nominating authorities (wing commander or equivalent or director) can nominate as many candidates as they choose, but should only nominate those who have the desired qualities for successful command, Francis said.
“Nominees should be exceptional leaders, have unimpeachable integrity, exhibit professional competence, and be able to motivate others, among other qualities,” she added.

Lady Liberty's Tears
By unitedweroll on May 9, 2012 | In Military News and Support
It was a bright day and the sun shone on Lady Liberty,
but large wet drops were falling all around.
With not a cloud in the sky the drops still fell
leaving heart shaped stains on the ground.
The wind was still and all was very quiet
except for a voice gentle like a whisper on the ear.
Looking up, one could see it was the Lady herself,
speaking softly and shedding heart shaped tears.
"I have stood in this harbor for decades gone by,
And I have welcomed millions to this great country.
People who left so much behind including their fears
As they dreamt of a home with work, peace and family
Though some periods have been hard over these years,
this country has stayed true to its foundation of liberty.
Through times of war and through times of peace,
I have stood with such pride as a symbol of the free.
Then came the attack on our very own shores and
not only the beginning of a long and terrible war,
but also a change I never thought I would see...
apologies for earned American pride and threats to Liberty.
My heart breaks as I watch what is happening these days.
Where is the indivisible, one nation this country used to be?
Clearly the Pledge of Allegiance needs to be said every day
and American traditions allowed to stand with the majority.
Proudly I stand with arm held high as a beacon of the free
and honor the Americans who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
I salute those who respect and protect the Constitution,
and cherish Freedom, Liberty and the American way of Life."
As the voice came to an end, a breeze began to gently blow,
a single cloud passing over put a shadow across her crown.
When it cleared, the Lady's face had dried and her lips were still
but the heart shaped tears remained on the ground.
Just then, came the sound of another whisper.
Was it the breeze or was it the Lady that one had heard?
The breeze stood still and she clearly said it again
"Under God - do not forget those words!"
